Greta

Greta - a life in photos

March 3rd 1934 – September 25th 2019

Greta was born at the Nelson Hospital in Merton to mother Ethelina and father William Motherwell, a direct descendent of the poet William Motherwell – a contemporary of Robert Burns – but spent most of her early years with her grandparents in Haddington, Scotland where she spoke both Gaelic and English.

On her return to England she studied ballet – later teaching – and the ‘Buddy Bradley’ style of tap dancing, with her focus firmly set on a career in show business. She was an all-rounder in variety but forged a partnership with a fellow singer Joyce to form the Copa Cousens, a singing duo which appeared at the London Palladium.

Greta was also an accomplished actress, puppeteer and children’s entertainer, appearing on BBC TV children’s programmes in the mid to late 1960’s.

As her husband, Tony, will confirm she sometimes demonstrated her poetry pedigree by penning a verse or two to raise a smile or mark a special moment or event.

But ‘Spikey’, as she was known to a special few, will be remembered by her close family and friends as a loving, caring, intuitive, modest and compassionate woman with a smile that lit-up up the room.

She will be missed.

God Bless
